The purpose of the hipbelt is to transfer as much of the load onto the hips, which greatly eases the strain on the shoulders. The hipbelt can make all the difference in the world in terms of comfort! I am amazed at the number of backpackers who do not bother to use the hipbelts on their backpacks.
